NDIS Explained

The NDIS, Without the Confusion

The National Disability Insurance Scheme exists to give Australians living with disability the support they need to live more independently and participate fully in their communities. But understanding how it works, what you are entitled to, and how to access the right services can feel overwhelming at first.

At Delton Health Care, we want to change that. This page breaks down the key things you need to know about the NDIS so you can make confident, informed decisions about your care.

What Are NDIS Supports?

The NDIS funds a range of supports that help participants achieve their goals and improve daily functioning. These supports fall into three broad categories.

Core Supports

These cover everyday assistance including help with daily tasks, transport, consumables, and social participation. Core supports are the most flexible part of an NDIS plan.

Capacity Building Supports

These are designed to build your skills and independence over time. Allied health services including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, psychology, and dietetics sit within this category. The goal is to help you do more for yourself, not create ongoing dependence.

Capital Supports

These cover higher-cost items such as assistive technology, home modifications, and specialised disability accommodation. Capital supports require specific justification and are tied to your individual plan goals.

Who Is Eligible?

Understanding eligibility is the first step toward accessing the support you or your loved one needs.

At Delton Health Care, we work with participants who are already funded as well as people who are exploring whether the NDIS is right for them. Here is a straightforward breakdown of who qualifies.

If you are unsure whether you or someone you support qualifies, reach out to our team. We can help you understand the access requirements and point you in the right direction.

FAQs

What is the NDIS and who runs it?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme is a federal government program managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency. It funds reasonable and necessary supports for Australians under 65 who live with a permanent and significant disability.
You can apply by contacting the NDIS directly on 1800 800 110 or by visiting ndis.gov.au. You will need to provide evidence of your disability and how it affects your daily life. A GP, specialist, or allied health professional can help you gather the necessary documentation.
The NDIS funds supports that are considered reasonable and necessary for a participant to live and engage in the community. This means the support must be related to your disability, represent value for money, and help you pursue your goals.
Yes. NDIS participants have the right to choose the providers they work with. Delton Health Care is a registered NDIS provider, meaning we can support participants who are agency-managed, plan-managed, or self-managed.
Your NDIS plan is reviewed regularly, typically every 12 months. If your circumstances or support needs change significantly before your scheduled review, you can request an unscheduled plan review through the NDIA.
